2015: Lori Fisler Damrosch

Lori-Damrosch-Nov2012-2-207x300A beloved teacher and mentor, Professor Damrosch is President of the American Society of International Law and the Hamilton Fish Professor of International Law and Diplomacy at Columbia Law School. Professor Damrosch started her legal career at the U.S. Department of State in the Office of the Legal Adviser, where from 1977 to 1981 she worked on East-West trade relations, litigation in international and domestic tribunals involving U.S. foreign relations, and the Iran hostage crisis. She continued to focus on international law when she moved into private practice, spending the next three years at Sullivan & Cromwell, where she worked on issues related to the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal. After joining the Columbia faculty in 1984, Professor Damrosch quickly built a reputation as a major figure in international law.

Today, her scholarship is widely cited, and she is the author of a leading casebook on international law. Additionally, Professor Damrosch has authored amicus briefs submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court on the relationship between international and domestic law, and she is a member of numerous international law and human rights organizations, including the Council on Foreign Relations, the Department of State Advisory Committee on International Law, and the Institut de Droit International. From 2003 to 2013, she served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of International Law. Her two-year term as President of the American Society of International Law began in April 2014.
